Giving is an important topic and we see this reflected across both the Old and New Testament in a variety of different contexts:

Old Testament:
1. Supporting those in full-time ministryin Numbers 18, we see that the tribe of Levi was appointed to be priests and religious leaders (an unpaid role at the time). The other 11 tribes gave 10% of their income to enable the Levites to carry out this role.
2. Supporting those in need in the communityin Deuteronomy 14, we see an example of giving to support “the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows“, highlighting the importance of giving to support those facing hardship
3.  Proportional and responsible givingin Deuteronomy 16, in the context of certain religious festivals occurring during the year, we read that “each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you” – it is important to give in a proportional way without  jeopardising your (or your family’s) finances

New Testament
1. Giving is as important as other areas of our Christian livesin 2 Corinthians 8:7, Paul writes to the church in Corinth to remind them that whilst they are excelling in “faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in love”, they should ensure that they also “excel in this grace of giving”.
2. The goal is equality among believers: in 2 Corinthians 8:13, we are reminded that the objective of giving is not to create additional financial burdens but so “that there might be equality…the goal is equality”. Verse 14 begins “At the present time”, which is a recognition that finances change – one day you might be the one giving, and another day the one receiving.
3. Giving is an expression of the sincerity of our love for one another: in 2 Corinthians 8:8, Paul says that he is not commanding the church to give, but that he “wants to test the sincerity of [their] love”. This gets to the real heart of what Christian giving is about – an expression of our love for one another.
